Tomi T Ahonen 3G Strategy Consultant's World 3G Commercial Network Deployment Maps

"Most 3G services will be launched simultaneously. This means it's going
to be important for operators to get pricing right," Tomi Ahonen
explained.
Total Telecom   3 April 2001

Info Updated Jan 7, 2004

Update includes first 3G operators going commercial in Spain, Germany, Ireland,

Hong Kong, the UAE and Portugal. Also more competitors in Japan, Italy and Austria.

Both maps have been recoloured

STATUS - 26 commercial launches, in 18 countries on five continents. Five countries

have competition in 3G. A total of 25 countries in the world have operational 3G

networks whether in commercial use or awaiting launch. The population of these

countries is 1.2 Billion people, although of course 3G networks are built first into primary

cities within these countries.

COMMENT: To conform to industry's majority view of what is 3G, this list has been revised

to define CDMA2000 1x RTT as NOT a 3G technology, but rather a 2.5G or 2.75G technology

that is considered more similar to GPRS than "true" 3G. There are about 35

CDMA2000 1X RTT launches worldwide and over 220 GPRS launches. Also EDGE is not

counted in the 3G launches (there are already several commercial EDGE launches)

The 3G launches tracked from now on will only include "real 3G" i.e. W-CDMA,

CDMA2000 EV-DO and CDMA2000 EV-DV.

ALSO NOTE: the 3G-ready networks status is now separated into its own map, see below.

(most known friendly user trials now incorporated into the second map below on known

launch-ready 3G networks)

COUNTRIES WITH LAUNCH-READY 3G NETWORKS (also same definition of 3G, as being WCDMA,

CDMA2000 EV-DO, and CDMA200 EV-DV)

NOTE 1: this information collected from public domain info, it is likely that more launch-ready networks

exist but info is not yet in public domain

NOTE 2: Typically a launch-ready network covers between 20% - 30% of a nation's population; very

roughly it typically means a network of the size of about 1,000 base stations

(Only first network in any country listed)

Already 25 significant countries (excluding Monaco, Luxembourg etc) have either launched, or have

launch-ready 3G networks. The total population of the countries covered is about 1.2 Billion people

and covers most of the world's advanced mobile penetration countries. Of course the 3G launch-ready

networks tend to be built into the biggest cities initially, so only a part of the population is covered with

the coverage being spread out ever more.
