WARGAMING SIMULATION FOR TELECOM COMPETITION: NOKIA'S EQUILIBRIUM
"I'm

The most
intense and reaction-preparatory training that exists on earth, is military
wargaming using advanced computer simulations.
Wargaming and computer simulation is used to train fighter pilots, tank
crews, submarine personnel, as well as civil aviation pilots and specialist
police forces. Anywhere where extreme reaction speed is needed to
respond to changing conditions are particularly well suited for wargaming and
computer simulation training.
Nokia has developed the world's most advanced competition simulation /
"wargame" designed expressly for 3G telecoms environments. The game is unique compared to other telecoms
simulations, in that each team starts off with a realistic, but very
different setting - one team is the former monopoly PTT, another is the
established mobile and fixed operator, a third is the recent new-entrant
mobile-only operator, another team is a fixed-only operator, while yet another
is a genuine new entrant operator without a license but with a lot of financial
support to enter any area. With the different types of players in the
simulation, most market realism can be introduced into the dynamic
competitive environment. Each team has to work in a fast-paced dynamic market,
making realistic decisions to build itself a profitable future over the next
decade. The best part of the simulation is that it is designed so, that inspite
of the varying starting points, any of the teams can win, and the simulation
has proven in real customer workshops that any team can, in fact, win.
The game
teaches dynamics of the telecoms marketplace especially when approaching
3G, with a focus on market share, revenues and
profits. Each team goes through total telecoms strategic
decision-making from licence applications to network builds to staff
recruitment to product development, competitor analysis, service porfolio
management, marketing, pricing, etc. Impacts of decisions are seen on a wide
realistic basket of market impacts, from financial statements to market shares
to churn and customer satisfaction etc.
Tomi Ahonen
is a trained Equilibrium facilitator, and is authorised by Nokia to run the
Nokia Equilibrium simulation for his customers.
The simulation is intended for mobile operators but can also be very
useful for fixed operators and MVNOs. The workshop runs two days and needs
between 15 and 30 participants to be able to be run. An ideal game
participation is 20 people, with an even mix of mid-to-senior level technical,
marketing and accounting people from inside and outside telecoms.
